Thursday Thirteen #24 . . . 13 Memorable Food Moments . . .

Baby Boy's First Meal Out
from Lori's Picture
Collection

For me, the smell, taste and even the sight of certain foods conjure memories--some good, some bad. The following are some of my most memorable food moments.

1). Hot tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches on a crisp fall or winter day

2) My Dad's stove popped popcorn, which he served to me and my younger brother in those little brown lunch bags

3) My M'Deah's homemade ice-cream on the 4th of July

4) The beautiful cake the hubby surprised me with upon my winning first place in a short story contest

5) My son's first restaurant meal--pancakes at the IHOP (see picture above)

6) The sight of chitlins soaking in the sink and the overpowering stench of them simmering in a huge pot on the stove

7) My grandfather standing out in the cold and barbecuing ribs under his carport in November just so my little brother could get one of his birthday wishes (a dinner of barbecued ribs) fulfilled.

8) Munching on candied apples, corn dogs and cotton candy at the Mid-South Fair

9) Gagging on okra at the dinner table when I was 3 or 4

10) The hamburgers my Aunt Doris would fry for us some Saturday evenings

11) Cooking and serving my grandmother one of her favorite meals--macaroni and cheese and fried chicken

12) My grandmother's sweet potato pie on Thanksgiving Day

13) The first time I ever prepared a meal of salad, baked potato, grilled steak and iced tea for the man I later married

Eating barbeque and potato salad at a family picnic on one of those summer holidays (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, or Labor Day) or the first time I prepared tacos (I was about 12 years old).

Aw man, your story about stove popped popcorn being served in those brown lunch bags brought back memories!

Some of my other meal memories are my mother fixing me my favorite meal as a young adult (roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy). Also when she would make a cake, I would love to lick the cake batter off of the mixers when she was done.

I love IHOP! And I'm a good bit older than 3 or 4 but I'd gag on okra today if I was forced to eat it!

My grandma' cheesecake - the german version, it's a bit different from the american one - and the first meal I cooked (almost) on my own aged 6 = pancakes :) *yummy*

Happy TT and greets

Do you still gag on okra? We've had some recently and it was so good. (I grew it.)

for me? I think it's just the smell of coffee - it always smells like happiness.

hey lori good seeing you over here...and APOOO reviewed your book and gave it a favorable rating...hehe.
Food--my son when he was about 15-18 months old reached over to my plate and grabbed some cajun shrimp...i freaked because i thought it was too hot/spicy for him and would make him sick...hmmm 16 years later...6'1" and 170 pounds he seems to be doing very well...lol.
Food--my son again...i had to find a new route home from day care because we couldn't pass McDonald's without him crying if we didn't stop for french fries. lol. HE still loves MCdonald's. LOL.
happy tt

Oh! Tomato soup! That's what I should have included with lunch.

I remember my granny had to have cornbread with every meal.

I remember my dad making something WONDERFUL out of random stuff from the pantry and never being able to re-create it.

I remember my hubby putting a candel in a little debbie fudge round for my birthday one year.

This is a fabulous list. #1 brings back memories for me too, lol. And I love sweet potato pie. I love walking in to Mom's home and smelling her home baked bread. It doesn't happen often now as she's turning 85 in a week, so when it does it's really special.

My favorite memory is standing on a stool (so I could be tall enough) at the stove making tapioca pudding for my dad. (I remember making popcorn on the stove as well!)

growing up a fave meal around my house was meatloaf, mac and cheese and green beans. Comfort food at it's best.

Thanks for sharing your memories... great TT. If you'd like, you can visit mine HERE
