Thursday Thirteen #31 . . . 13 Dog Types I Would/Have/Might Consider Owning . . .

I'm not a "dog person," but like the members of the next First Family, I may soon find myself sharing quarters with one. Sigh. My son and the hubby have their hearts set on some BIG a$$, hairy, stank-breath dog. Black Labs. Golden Retrievers. German Shepards, etc. My typical response to suggestions of this type are, "hell no" "have you lost your fricking mind?" and "forget about it."

Truth be known, my dog of preference would be a cat. (LOL) I like cats. I know cats. Cats use the litter box. Ordinarily, they don't suffer from chronic halitosis or enjoy rolling in their own poo. But since owning a cat is out of the question (the hubby is allergic), and I know I'm going to be the primary caretaker of said dog, I've drawn up a list of canines I would (have or might) consider owning.

1) Invisible (I mean really, wouldn't this be ideal? Can't we just all pretend?)

2) Stuffed (I'm saying, imagine the flexibility that comes with this choice. No barking. No shedding. No vet bills. No huge mounds of crap in the yard . . .)

3) Puppy (Okay, in all honesty, I've yet to meet the puppy I didn't like. If only they didn't eventually grow up to be big, stank breath dogs . . .)

4) From a pound or animal shelter (I do very much like the idea of rescuing some lost or abandoned or ill-fated pooch.)

5) Jack Russell (If I'm doomed to own a dog, I'd prefer a smart one. These dogs have always struck me as highly intelligent.)

6) Rat Terrier (This fits my preference for something small and cute. I'd actually be open to owning two of these, but the hubby appears to have a strong bias against any animal with the word "rat" in its name.)

7) Any short-haired Terrier (Have you noticed a theme or pattern yet? LOL)

8) Mutt (I've heard mixed bred-dogs have the best dispositions. And while I could easily live with a neurotic cat, co-habitating with a nut-case for a dog is out of the question.)

9) Beagle (I think this would make for a good compromise. It's not too big, not too small and they seem halfway intelligent, I mean for a dog.)

10) Hunting Dog/Pointer (My grandfather hunts and has always owned a hunting dog or two. So, I kind of know what to expect from this breed and they appear to have a fairly decent temperament.)

11) Chihuahua (Once upon a time, I didn't really like this type of dog. As a child, all the ones I ever saw were bug-eyed and yapped a lot. But in recent years, I've seen some cute and relatively quiet ones. The hubby grimaces at the thought of owing what he considers such a "foo-foo" dog.)

12) Any small, short-haired, female dog (Yes, I would prefer a girl dog. Of course, the hubby is lobbying for just the opposite.)

13) Hairless (Come on, how could you not love a dog who looks scared and shivers a lot? At least I wouldn't have to worry about her shedding .)

Well, any suggestions? I'm open . . . even though I'd still prefer a cat.

You are just too funny. Thanks for the laugh. I've had a few dogs in my time. I currently own two Golden Retrievers. The most intelligent animal I've ever had. I'd recommend a retriever or a lab. Thanks for sharing and Happy TT to you.

STUFFED is my favorite in my life right now. [we have two cats], and we've had 3 dogs at once when our kids were little...I'm done with having dogs. My favorite breed tho, is a Yorkshire Terrier.

My 13 is posted...stop by and hopefully laugh once or twice with Jefé the wise ol' lady!!

We love our Vizsla, Rose. She's active, like a Jack Russel, but very smart and funny.

No. 8 is the perfect model for this dog person! What a fun list. I laughed at No. 1, Lori!

I love the list. The reason I have a toy poodle is they are like cats!

How about a toy poodle, no shedding there. My grandmother used to breed them. Very cute.

Hi Lori - good to meet you! I'm voting for the Rattie and/or a shelter dog. We have a Yorkie and a Type B Rattie (called a Teddy Roosevelt Terrier) His name is Sam. Sam is slightly neurotic, is terrified of flies and his own bodily functions but he is a joy to be around. I have pics of them both on my blog. Happy TTing!

I like the big, hairy, stanky breathed dogs. Except maybe the neighbor's St. Bernard. That poor thing poops like you wouldn't believe.

Go for the beagle. I had a golden beagle mix for the 6 months I lived in England. Love that dog.

Ooh, Lori! You have GOT to scratch #6 from your list. My mother and I caught a wild hare and decided that we would buy the cutest little males, Cody and Khobie. HUGE mistake!! I took Khobie home, and he did not understand the concept of potty training, so he had to go and live with his grandma. They have to be some of the most active dogs I have ever seen. They both weigh less than four pounds, and they try to take on all the big dogs in the neighborhood. It's always a mess!

I like the invisible and stuffed options. I like other people's dogs too because I really don't want more responsibilities and so don't want to own a dog. Happy TT!

My dog of choice would also be a cat, but we have a Maltese and she's so cute I have to love her.

we had a peek-a-poo for 18 years and 'she' was a perfect dog. Small like a puppy, non shedding, could go all day without an accident, good with kids, just an all around good dog. Sorry she had to go. Good luck with your search.

I completely agree with you on #4. Shelter rescues are just as lovable and loving as any other pet. But I disagree with you about puppies -- kittens, too. Too much adrenaline and not enough brain! I much prefer dogs and cats to puppies and kittens. (Thanks for visiting my TT)

Funny 13!

I love big dogs. It is Rotties for us. German Rotts are extremely intelligent and they are NOT naturally agressive - they have to be trained and/or tortured to be mean. Definitely get a girl dog regardless - they don't mark there territory!

LOL! Invisible and stuffed!

Wouldn't work for me though, I love dogs! I've always said that ideally, I'd have 3 dogs, a small, medium, and large. I've got small and medium already: a Pomeranian, and a Dachshund mix. I really want to get a large one, but the rest of the family is against it! =(

The cutest thing I ever saw was a fearless little Maltese. I would consider owning one if I had the time or notion to care for anything but myself. I know, I know, I am self-centered, but it works for me.

If you are not fond of dogs it will be difficult to find one you will bond with. Good luck on finding one that will fit your needs. I happen to be partial to black labs.
Hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Sounds good to me-- I'm not a dog fan either ;) Thanks for stopping by! Happy Thanksgiving!
