THURSDAY THIRTEEN #20 . . . 13 ARETHA FAVORITES . . .

Aretha Franklin is another one of those artists who has produced so many great songs over the years, you hardly know where to start. The following are SOME of my favorite Queen of Soul songs. Feel free to add one or two of your own Aretha favorites in the comments, but try to mention something other than "Respect" (LOL).

1) A Natural Woman (You Make Me Feel Like) / 1967

2) Make It With You / 1971 live at Filmore West version

3) Day Dreaming / 1972

4) Dr. Feelgood / 1967

5) Chain of Fools / 1967

6) Rock Steady / 1971

7) Call Me / 1970

8) I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) / 1967

9) Do Right Woman-Do Right Man / 1967

10) Don't Play That Song / 1971 Live at Filmore West version

11) Spirit In The Dark / 1971 duet with Ray Charles that appeared on the "Aretha: Live at Filmore West" album/CD

12) Drown In My Own Tears / 1967

13) Baby, Baby, Baby / 1967

Natural Woman is unfortunately one of my least favorite songs. Oh well. :)

Happy TT.

Having singers like Aretha out there is one of my top 13 reasons for NOT watching American Idol.

Another of her songs I love is "Till You Come Back to Me". And I DO love "Natural Woman", though I think I like Carole King's version even more. Happy TT!

I loved Natural Woman, too. She is an artist whose voice is part of life.

I'm lovin' the list, but I can add to it.

"Call Me" -

"Oh Me Oh My (I'm A Fool For You Baby)"

"You Send Me"

"The House That Jack Built"

"Holy, Holy"

Any song on the soundtrack "Sparkle"

There is one record that everyone seems to like but me and that is "Spanish Harlem". I have never been able to stand that song.

As you said, it's hard to know where to start with an artist of Aretha's stature. I also agree with you about "Respect". It's a great song, but it gets played wayyy too much. Based on the playlists of some stations, you would think Aretha only had a handful of hits. Let me climb down from my soapbox and list some of my favorite Aretha tunes that haven't been mentioned:

Save Me
Ain't No Way
Share Your Love With Me
Baby I Love You
Eleanor Rigby
Jump To It

Happy TT! I'm not much for Arethra Franklin I think I've heard only 2 of those songs. Hope to see you at my 2nd edition about Nora Roberts at Talk About My Favorite Authors blog.

Pjazzypar already mentioned my favorite Aretha song -- her cover of "You Send Me" from Aretha Now. I also love "Another Night." I can't imagine anyone not liking Natural Woman. (I said, shaking my head in pity.) Of your list, "Day Dreaming" and "Chain of Fools."

I agree with you on "Respect." I'm the world's most loyal Paul McCartney fan, but am sick to tears of "Hey, Jude." (Thanks for visiting my TT)

I think I was alive when "Freeway of Love" came out. The rest of this stuff predates me by quite a bit. I am familiar with about half the list though.

Oh, I've missed this blog! This is what happens when you have to disappear under a rock for weeks at a time.

I'm late, but I'm chiming in anyway with my Aretha favorites: "You Send Me" (it plays at the end of the romantic comedy The Holiday), "Call Me," "Daydreaming," "'Til You Come Back to Me," and "A Rose is Still a Rose."
